Collaboration between UTM and TU Delft in Bio-based economy

JOHOR BAHRU, 25 November: - The Universiti Teknologi (Malaysia) and Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) plan to collaborate in research and development as well as international education in a number of key areas for both universities. A first target is the joint development of a postgraduate program in the field of bio-based economy. This will be build on the basis of the strong capabilities and world-class piloting facilities in industrial biotechnology, bio-refinery technology as well as bio-product development of both universities. It is expected that such collaborations will have a beneficial impact on the further development of the bio-based economy in both countries.

The "Vision on the Bio-based Economy" of The Netherlands government proposes a 30% target in terms of bio-renewable technologies for the collective energy, chemicals and materials sectors. This was recently substantiated by a macro-economic impact study by the Platform Renewable Resources, the advisory body of The Netherlands' government, and it was indicated that environmental, energy-security and economic targets could only be met by development of technologies as proposed in the UTM-TU Delft collaboration.
